I am excited to introduce you to Lex Fleming Photography. I have a lot to thank this photographer for and actually it is not for taking photos!  In the summer this year I went a long to London Wedding Breakfast Club that is run by Lex Fleming. It is through this club I have met lots of wonderfully talented and lovely people wedding industry people.  My blog has been filled introducing you all to photographers and Eco wedding suppliers. So a massive thank you Lex and I am so pleased I can feature you now.

So here are Lex’s top tips!….

What are your top 2 ‘Do and Don’t’ tips for couples on their wedding day?

Do: Do exactly whatever you want on your wedding day. Don’t want bridesmaids? Swap them for bridesmates that help out. Want a bouncy castle? DO IT! Your wedding day is meant to present you and your partner in every way possible. There are no other rules besides putting a ring on it

Don’t: Don’t forget the photographer. I’m not just saying this because I’m a photographer either! You’re going to be spending a lot of time, thought and money on your wedding day, and it’ll go so fast. You need a photographer to act on your behalf to document all the small things, along with the big key points of the day.

What is your advice when a couple is looking for a photographer?
A good photographer will make a £500 wedding look £50,000 in their photographs. A bad photographer can make a £50,000 wedding look £500! Choose wisely, don’t be swayed by price but style and how they fit your ideas. Also, try and meet your photographer, even if it’s over Skype or FaceTime. Your photographer will be with you from the morning when you’re getting dressed to when you’re doing the Mumbo No. 5 so you have to get along with them!

Your top tip for Styling your day?
Sometimes less is more. Pinterest is the worst for giving you a thousand and one ideas, but if you try and incorporate all those themes in one, each one can get slightly diluted. Go with 1 or 2 ‘themes’ and roll with it.

Do you think you should “Trash your Dress”?
YESSS! People hear the word ‘trash’ and they get terrified! But its more about putting your dress back on, either at an anniversary or just a few months later and have some more photographs taken. This is where my point about Pinterest comes from; if you have more ideas than you can fit in your day, then save one for a trash the dress. Head to the beach, or the Highlands and do something a bit different.

Earlier this year I met with 4 awesome couples who all met at University and they all put their wedding outfits back on and we had such a laugh running round Brighton in their dresses!

Engagement shoots seem to be very fashionable at the moment. What are the advantages of having one?
Lots! You get to work with your photographer before the wedding day and see how they work. Your photographer can talk you through different shots and poses with plenty of time so you can all pick a couple that work for you. Also means you have beautiful images of you to remember your dating years, when you’re old and grey! On a practical level, they are great for any save the dates, for invites, or for popping a few round your wedding reception to personalise the space.

What has surprised you the most about wedding photography?
That I absolutely adore it. When I first started as a Photographer over 10 years ago I was always asked whether I photographed weddings and I always said no! Back then, I still saw weddings at plain white, traditional and slightly boring. Now that I’m in the industry and I’ve discovered that weddings can be so personal and custom to every single couple I just love it! I love meeting new people every week, chatting to guests and most importantly being able to help couples remember this part of their life.

How you describe your style of photography?
Quirky and non traditional. This doesn’t mean I don’t photograph traditional, but I just adore the really quirky, bright weddings were some traditions have been thrown out the window! I take elements of what I learnt as a fashion photographer to make really beautiful images during the couple shots part of the day, but then elements of what I learnt as a music and tour photographer to document all those small moments.

What can a couple do for you on the big day?
I always ask my couples to think methodically about their time line of the day. Try not to leave only an hour between the end of the the ceremony to guests sitting to eat. In that time, I have to organise the confetti shot, do your big group shot of you and all your guests, any smaller group shots you have of immediate family and your couple shots…..along with lovely candid shots of all your guests having a great time!

Indoor or outdoor wedding?
Oooo that’s a tough choice! From a photographers point of view it has to be outside! Natural light wins over everything! But due to it being rainy old England, you do run the risk of being rained on.

Themed or none theme?
Whatever suits the couple. I’m dying to photograph a proper movie themed wedding though. Bring me some Wes Anderson or Star Wars themed weddings

Local or Destination?
Local. You live in that area for a reason! Save destination for a vow renewal or an anniversary holiday.

Big or small?
I come from a big family and I just love the idea of a really big, lively wedding. Where the cheer and laughter is deafening! However, I’ve photographed small weddings and been the 13th guest and they are so intimate and beautiful.
